Culture Club South Bay is a free pilot youth engagement program, that kicked off on Saturday, September 25th, 2021, at Bruce’s Beach, Manhattan Beach. The program is comprised of youth from Manhattan Beach and Torrance ages 8 to 13, with volunteers from all over age 16+. It includes 3 segments: volleyball, surfing, and a culinary class.
Allison was recently interviewed by Easy Reader News about her program. The Culture Club brings 24 kids each week to the beach, and they are met not only by surf instructors and volleyball coaches, but by local kids who welcome them to the beach. “Everyone gets to meet different cultures, because it’s not a field trip to see how the wealthy live at the beach. It’s inclusion. They build relationships. It’s bridging the gap between that feeling, that uncomfortability factor. It’s also healing. If we are going to be human about this, if you are only around a certain culture, a certain race, a certain type of food, and you don’t get exposed to anything else…There is going to be a barrier. That is only natural.” Allison explained.
